I’m Kendall, and today I’m inviting you into a very personal chapter of my life. In this special blog post, I want to share with you a story that is deeply rooted in my heart, a story that revolves around my adoptive parents, Betty and Ruble Austin, and the profound impact they had on my life.

The Adoption That Changed Lives

My journey with my parents began when I was just two months old. They took custody of me and officially adopted me nine months later, adhering to the Arkansas law that allowed birth parents a window to reclaim their child. That never happened, and thus, my life with the Austins began. My mother, Betty, was a beacon of love and warmth until she passed away when I was ten, and my father, Ruble, continued to be my rock until his passing when I was sixteen.

A Church, a Community, and a Family

Our family story intertwines with the church, particularly Gosnell Baptist Church in our hometown. My parents, especially my mother, believed in the importance of supporting our local community and wanted me to grow up knowing the children I would eventually go to school with. This decision to attend the local church, despite having connections at First Baptist Church in the neighboring town, was a testament to their belief in community and togetherness.

Treasured Voices from the Past

Recently, my partner Corey and I discovered something precious: audio cassettes from my childhood, featuring the voices of my parents. One cassette captured my mother, Betty, leading a Sunday School class with a gentle, loving, and patient demeanor, while another featured my father, Ruble, reading to me with a voice that was both engaging and comforting. These tapes are not just recordings; they are timeless treasures that allow me to once again hear the voices of my parents, bringing back a flood of cherished memories and emotions.

Artistic Memories and Lasting Impressions

My mother was an incredible artist, and we shared beautiful moments attending private art classes together, especially during the time when she was battling illness. These moments were not just art lessons; they were precious times where we created lasting memories, and I got to witness her incredible talent and passion for art. Her belief that she was meant to be a mom resonates with me, and I am forever grateful for the ten years I got to spend with her.

A Legacy of Love and Learning

My parents instilled in me a love for reading and learning. My father, despite not having formal education beyond high school, was a master of English, grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and he passed this gift to me. He and my mother ensured that I was surrounded by books and was encouraged to explore the world through them. Their dedication to my education has shaped me and continues to influence my life and career.

Conclusion: A Tribute to Unconditional Love

As I share these memories with you, tears may flow, but they are tears of gratitude and love for the two incredible people who shaped me. My parents, through their love, teachings, and even through these audio cassettes, have left an indelible mark on my heart. Their legacy lives on through the stories I share, the lessons they’ve taught me, and the love they showered upon me.

Thank you for allowing me to share this intimate journey with you. It is my hope that these stories of adoption, love, and family resonate with you and perhaps bring peace to those navigating their own stories of discovery and belonging.
